On the very beginning they were looking for help, support, people who have the same problem. Internet was the main channel – chat rooms on webs like onet, wp, interia… after that private webs, portals… Amazons (women after breast cancer) work together – they’ve got web site amazonki.net . On this web every single person in need will find help, support, advice, good doctors’ address – no matter whether she is sick or wants to help someone. Women on this web also often support charity actions, like this…

Lets collect money for another chemotherapy for Alice

ALICIA NGALA, Kenya – but we call her just Alice :)

When the breast cancer strikes one can’t wait. We’re collecting money for Alice’s therapy. Alice lives in Kenya. Now we have got money for one application, but Alice needs 4 more and 5-years-long hormones therapy.
She hasn’t had an operation yet but probably the operation will have to be done...

The whole thing started with Radek …

He spent last 6 years in Africa - 2 years in Lusaka (Zambia), 2 years in Lilongwe (Malawi), and now he is in Nairobi (Kenya). He graduated from Catholic University in Lublin (KUL) with a major in law, and now he is studying international relations in Kenya.

Radek about Alicja:

I admit that it is hard to write something ad hoc about Alicja. It would be much better to make an interview with her, but unfortunately she is not too eager to talk about herself. Everything I know about her is based on a few conversations with her. She graduated from the Catholic University Of Eastern Africa in the International Relations Institute. Her major was Peace Missions. Because of her outstanding achievements she was invited to continue her study – towards Ph. D
All her plans had to be changed or at least suspended, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2008. Since that time the disease is progressing, and now she is in its II stage.

Radek about health care in Kenya:

I think that I should explain how health care looks like in Kenya. There is no national health care system and you have to pay for everything. Sick people are divided into those who have money and can pay for their treatment and those who don't have money and can't afford proper treatment (they should simply stay healthy). Only a few catholic hospitals treat poor people.
When you are diagnosed with the cancer in Kenya, the treatment you'll receive depends on your financial status. Unfortunately Alice belongs to the poor group – so she looks for treatment in places where it is cheap. She had enough money for the first chemotherapy, but it wasn't enough for additional medicines. Next chemotherapy she had to postpone because of the lack of money...

Radek about money:

Alicja has her scholarship and she gets financial help (150$ monthly) for her child – her husband died in a car crash. Some time ago she was selling clothes, but now she has no strength to carry it on. It is not enough – one chemotherapy costs about 30 000 KSH (400$).
